LENOVO TEASES WHAT MIGHT BE AN ALL SCREEN PHONE

Lenovo Vice President Chang Cheng is teasing a new phone on China’s Weibo social network that’s nothing but screen framed by an ultra-thin bezel (via CNET). While Apple might claim that the iPhone X is “all screen,” its infamous notch — and the rash of Android imitators that followed — says otherwise. The sketch of the upcoming Lenovo Z5 follows the earlier release of a partial image alongside a claim that the phone would feature an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 95 percent. Cheng also says the Z5 will include four technological breakthroughs including 18 patented technologies. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the details, particularly around how Lenovo will handle a presumed front-facing camera.   Z5 teaser shared last week. Image: Chang Cheng The Mi Mix 2, for example, has a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, which is amongst the industry’s best, but it still requires a bezel along the bottom to host the phone’s front-facing camera. Vivo’s Apex concept uses...

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9 ALL WE KNOW

Samsung's follow-up to the Galaxy Note 8 might look pretty similar to its predecessor. At least, according to a possible render of the Galaxy Note 9 shared by mobile tipster Ice Universe.   Samsung's Galaxy Note handsets are the brand's most high-end and expensive phones. Because of this they tend to get Samsung's most premium features. But based off the picture it seems like not much has outwardly changed between the Galaxy Note 8 and the Note 9. It also appears that the Note 9 could come with a dedicated Bixby button, like previous Samsung phones. Ice Universe claims that the two phones are virtually indistinguishable, adding that the new Note could be 2mm shorter than the Note 8 with no in-display fingerprint scanner. As with most rumors, this should be taken with a grain of salt, but Ice Universe has a track record of making Samsung predictions and posting images of its phones before their release. Samsung did not immediately respond when CNET reache...

Rick and Morty is getting a whopping 70 more episodes

Since it debuted in 2013, Adult Swim’s show Rick and Morty has become a massive hit. Earlier today, Comedy Central and series co-creator Justin Roiland announced that they’re making another 70 — that’s right, 70 — episodes. The animated science fiction show is a staple of Comedy Central’s Adult Swim; it follows Rick, a brilliant-but-cynical alcoholic scientist and his impressionable grandson, Morty, as they embark on a variety of zany adventures across the multiverse. Comedy Central didn’t announce when the series would resume, and Roiland noted that he’s anticipating the deluge of tweets from the show’s fans, asking when season 4 will arrive. While there was just over a year between seasons 1 and 2, that hiatus extended for nearly two years between seasons 2 and 3 (with one episode released months earlier, on April 1st, 2017). At the end of season 3, one character broke the fourth wall, telling the audience that they’ll “see ya in season 4 in, like, a really long time.”...

Apple invests in greenhouse gas-free aluminum smelting

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard joined a key execs from Apple and industrial manufacturers Alcoa and Rio Tinto to announce a new process for smelting aluminum that removes greenhouse gases from the equation. Alcoa and Rio Tinto are creating a joint venture in based in Montreal called Elysis, to help mainstream the process, with plans to make it commercially available by 2024. Along with swapping carbon for oxygen as a byproduct of the production process, the technology is also expected to reduce costs by 15-percent. It’s easy to see why Apple’s jumped at investing into tech here, investing $13 million CAD ($10 million USD) in the process. The company has been making a big push over the past couple of years to reduce its carbon footprint across the board. This time last month, Apple   announced that it had moved to 100-percent clean energy for its global facilitates. “Apple is committed to advancing technologies that are...

YOUTUBE HDR COMES TO IPHONE X

YouTube has rolled out high dynamic range (HDR) to users of the iPhone X, enabling improved contrast and color on HDR-enabled YouTube videos. As spotted by Macrumors, videos like those from the popular HDR Channel, are now able to be viewed in HDR mode. Neither the iPhone X nor the Apple TV are able to output the videos in 4K, however. Not to be confused with HDR for photography, high dynamic range for video and TVs expands the range of both contrast and color significantly. Bright parts of the image can get much brighter, so the image seems to have more "depth." Colors get expanded to show more bright blues, greens, reds and everything in between. OLED-powered screens like the one on the iPhone X are particularly adept at showing HDR. The HDR capability isn't stated in the release notes for the latest 13.17 update which only lists "General fixes and stability improvements". YouTube is the latest company to enable HDR for the iPhone X after N...
