LENOVO TEASES WHAT MIGHT BE AN ALL SCREEN PHONE

Lenovo Vice President Chang Cheng is teasing a new phone on China’s Weibo social network that’s nothing but screen framed by an ultra-thin bezel (via CNET). While Apple might claim that the iPhone X is “all screen,” its infamous notch — and the rash of Android imitators that followed — says otherwise. The sketch of the upcoming Lenovo Z5 follows the earlier release of a partial image alongside a claim that the phone would feature an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 95 percent. Cheng also says the Z5 will include four technological breakthroughs including 18 patented technologies. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the details, particularly around how Lenovo will handle a presumed front-facing camera.   Z5 teaser shared last week. Image: Chang Cheng The Mi Mix 2, for example, has a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, which is amongst the industry’s best, but it still requires a bezel along the bottom to host the phone’s front-facing camera. Vivo’s Apex concept uses a p

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9 ALL WE KNOW

Samsung's follow-up to the Galaxy Note 8 might look pretty similar to its predecessor. At least, according to a possible render of the Galaxy Note 9 shared by mobile tipster Ice Universe.   Samsung's Galaxy Note handsets are the brand's most high-end and expensive phones. Because of this they tend to get Samsung's most premium features. But based off the picture it seems like not much has outwardly changed between the Galaxy Note 8 and the Note 9. It also appears that the Note 9 could come with a dedicated Bixby button, like previous Samsung phones. Ice Universe claims that the two phones are virtually indistinguishable, adding that the new Note could be 2mm shorter than the Note 8 with no in-display fingerprint scanner. As with most rumors, this should be taken with a grain of salt, but Ice Universe has a track record of making Samsung predictions and posting images of its phones before their release. Samsung did not immediately respond when CNET reache

Rick and Morty is getting a whopping 70 more episodes

Since it debuted in 2013, Adult Swim’s show Rick and Morty has become a massive hit. Earlier today, Comedy Central and series co-creator Justin Roiland announced that they’re making another 70 — that’s right, 70 — episodes. The animated science fiction show is a staple of Comedy Central’s Adult Swim; it follows Rick, a brilliant-but-cynical alcoholic scientist and his impressionable grandson, Morty, as they embark on a variety of zany adventures across the multiverse. Comedy Central didn’t announce when the series would resume, and Roiland noted that he’s anticipating the deluge of tweets from the show’s fans, asking when season 4 will arrive. While there was just over a year between seasons 1 and 2, that hiatus extended for nearly two years between seasons 2 and 3 (with one episode released months earlier, on April 1st, 2017). At the end of season 3, one character broke the fourth wall, telling the audience that they’ll “see ya in season 4 in, like, a really long time.”

Apple invests in greenhouse gas-free aluminum smelting

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard joined a key execs from Apple and industrial manufacturers Alcoa and Rio Tinto to announce a new process for smelting aluminum that removes greenhouse gases from the equation. Alcoa and Rio Tinto are creating a joint venture in based in Montreal called Elysis, to help mainstream the process, with plans to make it commercially available by 2024. Along with swapping carbon for oxygen as a byproduct of the production process, the technology is also expected to reduce costs by 15-percent. It’s easy to see why Apple’s jumped at investing into tech here, investing $13 million CAD ($10 million USD) in the process. The company has been making a big push over the past couple of years to reduce its carbon footprint across the board. This time last month, Apple   announced that it had moved to 100-percent clean energy for its global facilitates. “Apple is committed to advancing technologies that are goo

YOUTUBE HDR COMES TO IPHONE X

YouTube has rolled out high dynamic range (HDR) to users of the iPhone X, enabling improved contrast and color on HDR-enabled YouTube videos. As spotted by Macrumors, videos like those from the popular HDR Channel, are now able to be viewed in HDR mode. Neither the iPhone X nor the Apple TV are able to output the videos in 4K, however. Not to be confused with HDR for photography, high dynamic range for video and TVs expands the range of both contrast and color significantly. Bright parts of the image can get much brighter, so the image seems to have more "depth." Colors get expanded to show more bright blues, greens, reds and everything in between. OLED-powered screens like the one on the iPhone X are particularly adept at showing HDR. The HDR capability isn't stated in the release notes for the latest 13.17 update which only lists "General fixes and stability improvements". YouTube is the latest company to enable HDR for the iPhone X after N

WHO IS EXICTED ABOUT ANTMAN AND THE WASP

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”   In the aftermath of “Captain America:   Civil War,” Scott Lang (Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father.   As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past. This will be the 20th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man. That original film was another critical and commercial success for the studio, grossing $519.3 million at the worldwide box office. Scott Lang also appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as a member of Cap’s team. Ant-Man and the Wasp marks the first time a woman superhero serves as

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore on the future of Windows and connecting phones to PCs

Microsoft’s new Your Phone app isn’t ready for Windows 10 users to even try fully yet, as the company is still building the app, but it’s clear this will be the central way to connect phones to PCs. While Microsoft has used Cortana for linking SMS and notifications to PCs in the past, this new app will be the primary way phones connect to Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft has shown off messages, notifications, and photo sharing at the moment, but not all of these features will necessarily work on both iOS and Android. “We will actually have photos on iOS and notifications as well,” explains Shilpa Ranganathan. “Apple does make it a tad harder for messages, but we’re very willing to work with Apple.” A number of third-party apps use workarounds to support messages, but Microsoft’s vision is essentially to bring iMessage to Windows inside its Your Phone app. “I want to do this in a supported way with a respect for the ecosystem we’re building on and at the same time make it a delightful

GOOGLE LENS AMAZING FEATURES

As part of the latest update, Google Lens is going to be built into 10 different Android devices’ native cameras, including Google Pixel 2 and LG 7 ThinQ devices, so you don’t have to open a separate app. There will also be a real-time finder that will analyze what your camera sees even before you press click. If you point your camera at a poster of a musician, Lens can also start playing a music video. You open up any camera app, and Google Lens will tell you what’s in the image. The image recognition tool can give users more information about things like books, buildings, and works of art. How it works is that you take a photo, and the tool will process the pixels through machine learning to provide more details and also provide relevant search tags. Google has more of an eye on retail with this new update to Lens: instead of just identifying clothes, it will also provide you with shopping links on occasion, if it recognizes the brand or style. Lens can also recognize

FACEBOOK TO SIMPLIFY STREAMING OF USERS WITH NEW UPDATE

Facebook   is making some updates to its Live video platform which should streamline the process of getting a stream set up and in front of the widest possible audience. The company notes in a blog post that the daily average of Live streams from verified Pages is up 1.5x this year over the past year. In addition to the updates to the Live API, Facebook has also announced that they’re testing a rewind feature for the Live video, something that has previously been unavailable. Facebook is going to begin allowing Live videos to be “crossposted” to multiple Pages at the same time. That means if an organization or publisher has multiple Pages where a single Facebook Live video could be featured, they’ll be able to send it to all of them live as an original post without having to re-share one sent by the main account manually. The crossposting feature will allow publishers to more easily reach broader audiences without going through a bunch of unnecessary steps. It’s something pub

Facebook stopped accepting foreign-funded ads about Ireland’s abortion

Facebook   has announced it has stopped accepting ads paid for by foreign entities that are related to a referendum vote in Ireland later this month, saying it’s acting to try to prevent outsiders from attempting to skew the vote. The referendum will decide whether to repeal or retain Ireland’s constitutional ban on abortion. “Concerns have been raised about organisations and individuals based outside of Ireland trying to influence the outcome of the referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland by buying ads on Facebook. This is an issue we have been thinking about for some time,” the company writes today on its Dublin blog. “Today, as part of our efforts to help protect the integrity of elections and referendums from undue influence, we will begin rejecting ads related to the referendum if they are being run by advertisers based outside of Ireland.” Facebook says it’s stopping foreign-funded ads because additional ad transparency and election int

TWITTER HAS AN UNLAUNCHED ENCRYPTED MESSAGE FEATURE

Buried inside Twitter’s   Android app is a “Secret conversation” option that if launched would allow users to send encrypted direct messages. The feature could make Twitter a better a home for sensitive communications that often end up on encrypted messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp. The encyrpted DMs option was first spotted inside the Twitter for Android application package (APK) by Jane Manchun Wong. APKs often contain code for unlaunched features that companies are quietly testing or will soon make available. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the record. It’s unclear how long it might be before Twitter officially launches the feature, but at least we know it’s been built. The appearance of encrypted DMs comes 18 months after whistleblower Edward Snowden asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for the feature, which Dorsey said was “reasonable and something we’ll think about”. Twitter has gone from “thinking about” the feature to prototyping it. Th

Southeast Asia e-commerce startup iPrice raises $4M led by chat app Line’s VC arm

iPrice, a service that aggregates Southeast Asia’s e-commerce websites in a single destination, has pulled in new funding led by messaging app Line’s VC arm, Line Ventures. The round is officially undisclosed, but TechCrunch understands from a source close to negotiations that it is worth around $4 million. Existing iPrice   backers Cento Ventures (formerly known as Digital Media Partners) and Venturra Capital also took part in this round. iPrice, which has its HQ in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, previously raised a $4 million Series A in late 2016. Today’s investment takes the startup to $9.7 million raised overall. The company was started in 2015 in response to the growing number of e-commerce companies in Southeast Asia, and in particular the increasing number of vertical-specific options. Even though there are some giants, such as Alibaba’s Lazada, the region has a number of smaller players that can struggle for visibility. iPrice was initially a coupon site, befor
